POSITION: Acquisitions Editor
DEPARTMENT: University of Georgia Press
JOB SUMMARY:
The Acquisitions Editor is responsible to the Editor in Chief of the University of Georgia Press for developing intellectually distinguished and successful lists in several fields and/or subject areas, as needed by the University Press, by evaluating and acquiring manuscripts. Acquisitions Editors acquire and transmit 20-25 high-quality marketable new manuscripts per year for the UGA Press in assigned subject areas.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
75% Identify suitable authors, artists, and photographers (as applicable) to develop trade titles. Seek out and/or commission new book projects, sometimes in partnership with regional and state organizations. Attend conferences and visit campuses to seek out works in progress. Acquire and transmit 20-25 high-quality, marketable new manuscripts per year.
13% Solicit and evaluate reports from suitable external readers. Prepare projects for presentation to the Press's faculty Editorial Board.
5% Guide authors on project development, revisions and manuscript preparation.
3% Present books to the Press's faculty editorial board at quarterly meetings and via mail ballot in between regularly scheduled meetings.
2% Negotiate contracts in close consultation with the Press's Director and Editor-in-Chief and Contracts Manager.
2% Maintain flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the department and organization by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.
