POSITION: Information Technology Professional - Associate (IT Professional Associate)

JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible to the Head of Network Operations and Computer Support for assisting in the maintenance of Windows and other network computers in various UGA Librariesí locations, as well as assisting and aiding in planning for any new installations or enhancements to existing servers. Primary administrative duties include the maintenance and installation of network software on client workstations running Windows or other operating systems; upgrading operating systems; updating databases and search software; performing backups of file server disk storage; documenting services offered through the Libraries' networked environment; and providing training to the Libraries' staff for services offered. The person in this position must identify technical problems, including network, software and/or hardware malfunctions, and resolve them directly or refer them to the appropriate personnel. Daily functions include workstation troubleshooting and preventive maintenance and software installations and configurations.

Work requires moving extensively throughout the buildings and physical tasks, such as bending, lifting, and climbing. Manual dexterity is necessary for handling and installing delicate electronics components, as well as adequate physical strength to facilitate lifting, packing, and moving computer and computer peripheral equipment. Work is performed independently along established guidelines subject to periodic review and requires exercising considerable judgment, discretion and initiative and acceptance of considerable responsibility. This position can require a flexible schedule including nights and weekends to perform network and server maintenance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

20% *Responds to questions from Librariesí staff about network and workstation problems by providing direct, e-mail, and/or phone assistance.

20% *Hardware: Maintains Library public and staff workstations and peripheral equipment by installing and upgrading computer hardware, operating systems, and related equipment.

10% *Software: Ensures local workstation functionality by performing troubleshooting and making or arranging for resolution of application software and operating system problems on public and staff workstations.

5% Network: Ensures local workstation functionality by performing troubleshooting and making or arranging for repairs of network connectivity, network protocols, and network transport problems on public and staff workstations.

5% Assists in maintaining Library servers by testing, installing and upgrading operating system and application software, hardware and related equipment, defining defaults, making hardware repairs as needed, and performing system backups as necessary.

5% Assists in ensuring LAN functionality by monitoring switching equipment, servers and clients for possible malfunction or inefficiencies, and by performing troubleshooting and making or arranging for repairs of network problems.

5% Assists in maintaining Library ILL (Interlibrary Loan) scanning equipment and Ariel document transmission servers.

5% Instructs Library staff in the use of equipment and applications in groups or one-on-one instruction.

5% Ensures currency and reliability of application software by evaluating new and upgraded network/workstation applications for potential use and new services.

5% Assists the Department Head by providing information about software and hardware which library staff are considering for purchase by sharing observations about compatibility with existing products and related information and providing detailed specifications for the purchase of new software and hardware.

5% Assists with charting and maintaining local database of microcomputer equipment, assigned network TCP/IP numbers and corresponding MAC ID number in use at the Library.

5% Maintains currency of stand-alone CD-ROM workstations and peripherals by performing regular updates and back-ups.

3% Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the office and organization by assuming similar duties as assigned.

2% Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via the UGA Libraries Help Desk application, GRAPEVINE, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.
