Music Library Statistical and Historical Information

Our institution is home to one of the major music research collections in the Southeast. Books, scores, sound/video recordings, music periodicals, and electronic databases and full text resources are available which cover all aspects of musical performance, all periods of music history, music education and therapy, and current curriculum materials. The collection contains over 132,000 titles distributed among books (over 40,000), scores (over 75,000), periodicals (525), audio/video recordings (36,000), and electronic resources (8 music specific; 300+/- via GALILEO). Overall these figures represent a collection of over 190,000 volumes. The collections are primarily developed to facilitate the research and performance needs of the School of Music faculty and students, but also contain many titles of interest to the greater University community and general public.

The Music Research Collection is located on the 2nd Floor of the Main Library. The collection includes books, scores, periodicals, and microforms. The Main Library is also home to several major music archival collections, such as the Guido Adler Collection, the Olin Downes Collection, and the Edwin Gerschefski Collection; these and other resources are available in the Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

Since 1995 the Music Library, located in the School of Music, has operated as a branch collection of the Main Library, with its collection of materials developed by the Music Bibliographer following existing UGA Libraries policies. The Music Library contains a number of commonly used books, scores, pedagogical materials, and major curriculum series used in elementary and secondary school music programs, and also serves as the primary access point for music audio and video recordings, as well as all music course reserve materials. Music audio formats collected include LPs, CDs and audio cassettes, and video formats include VHS tapes, 12" Laserdiscs, and DVDs.

Supplementing the traditional print materials available for research, the library makes every effort to provide the major electronic indexes and full-text resources in the field of music and to provide both local and remote access to UGA faculty, students, and staff. The electronic versions of Music Index, RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, and the International Index to Music Periodicals provide maximum coverage of current music periodical literature. Well over 200 periodicals are available electronically in full-text, and Grove Music Online provides electronic access to one of the most significant encyclopedias of music in the English language.
