Job Summary

The Publicist and Social Media Coordinator develops, coordinates, and implements publicity and social media plans for UGA Press books and publishing programs. They work closely with the Publicity Manager and the Marketing and Sales Director to generate publicity campaigns for an assigned percentage of the 60 trade and academic titles published by the Press each year. The Publicist and Social Media Coordinator partners with the authors of assigned books and other members of the Press to understand the book and reach its appropriate audience. The Publicist and Social Media Coordinator creates pitch letters and press releases, researches media using the Cision database, and assembles mailing lists for print and digital ARCs. The position reviews copies, schedules editor interviews, organizes author tours, signings, and other book-related events, and establishes fruitful relationships with journalists. The position coordinates social media campaigns for select academic and trade publications and is responsible for ad and website promotional designs.

Since its founding in 1938, the primary mission of the University of Georgia Press has been to support and enhance the University’s place as a major research institution by publishing both outstanding works of scholarship by writers throughout the world and books of interest to general readers. The Press has been a member of the Association of University Presses since 1940 and is the largest book publisher in the state. With a full-time staff of 26 publishing professionals, the Press currently publishes 60 new books a year and has over 1,500 titles in print. The Press is also a founding partner of the New Georgia Encyclopedia, the state’s award-winning, online only, multimedia reference work on the people, places, events, and institutions of Georgia.

Duties and Responsibilities

50 *Publicity:
Identifies the most appropriate audience for assigned titles; researches, organizes, and develops media lists and contacts for assigned titles; develops detailed knowledge of scholarly and trade media in key disciplines and contacts with key editors in those disciplines; researches and writes press materials; arrange interviews with feature editors and radio and television producers; organizes book signings, author lectures, and other related events; initiates special efforts outside of designated publicity plans.
25 *Social Media:
Develops and maintains an innovative social media program to announce Press books, author events, and advance the overall Press brand. Coordinates social media outreach with the Publicity and Social Media Manager and other relevant in-house contacts to ensure that social media efforts are coordinated and integrated as effectively as possible with Press and Library activities and goals. Components of social media program include the Press blog, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, and Goodreads accounts. Monitor trends in social media and investigate additional tools and avenues for using social media.
10 *Email marketing:
Prepare and send individual new title announcements and monthly newsletters for titles assigned to this position each season
5 Maintains positive author relations by initiating and sustaining proactive contact throughout the publicity process.
5 Participate in department meetings and contribute during marketing strategy sessions. Represent Press at book exhibits and sales events. Participate in professional development opportunities.

5 Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the office and organization by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

One year of performing publicity duties at a university press, book publisher, or nonprofit arts organization preferred
