Job Summary

The Special Collections Libraries (SCL) Instruction and Community Engagement Librarian provides instruction sessions promoting archival collections and SCL services both in-person and virtually; develops community engagement initiatives through fostering partnerships and projects with state-wide community partners; and provides reference service and research assistance to on and off-site patrons. 
 

The SCL Instruction and Community Engagement Librarian is responsible to the Public Service Coordinator for SCL and works in collaboration with the SCL Department Heads and other SCL instruction and public-facing staff. The Special Collections Libraries houses three libraries: Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, and Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection. Duties and Responsibilities

30 Develops relationships and engages with diverse community partners across the state, remotely and in person, to collaborate on programming and community-centered projects that enhance the equity of voices and experiences across the Libraries’ collections and public programs; investigates and implements models and provides tools for collection and documentation such as community archiving and digitization kits.
30 Leads instructional sessions both in-person and virtually that draw on archival pedagogies to introduce students to primary sources and enable them to effectively use the Libraries’ collections and services; collaborates in developing instructional tools. 
20 Provides reference services to patrons both on-site and remotely, develops and promotes research tools, maintains awareness of new acquisitions, and assists in fulfilling patron scan and photocopy requests.  This includes weekly hours on a public service desk. 
10 Participates in the implementation of K-12 outreach including school visits and curriculum-based field trips.

Maintains working knowledge of each department’s usage policies and collaborates with representatives from each department to revise and develop access policies and procedures as needed.

Contributes to the mission of the SCL, and UGA Libraries as a whole, by participating in meetings, program reviews, planning, developing and evaluating policies and procedures, and strategic planning for the department as assigned.

Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via GRAPEVINE (the Libraries’ listserv) and other communication tools, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.

Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the organization and contributes to the team effort by assuming other similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Maintains an awareness of current trends in research and reference in the archival field by participating in professional activities. 

 

Qualifications

An ALA-accredited master’s degree in librarianship/information science or foreign equivalent, or a master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work.

Candidates will be considered at the rank of Librarian or Archivist I, II, III, or IV. 

To be considered at the level of Librarian/Archivist II, candidates must have 2 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in librarianship/information science, or 2 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work and ACA certification for archivists 

To be considered at the level of Librarian/Archivist III, candidates must have 5 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in librarianship/information science, or 5 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work and ACA certification for archivists 

To be considered at the level of Librarian/Archivist IV, candidates must have 10 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in librarianship/information science, or 10 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work and ACA certification for archivists

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies

·       Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive educational environment and workplace;

·       Excellent communication, research and writing skills; 

·       Excellent collaboration skills;  

·       Familiarity with providing research and reference services and instruction in an archives or special collections environment;

·       Working knowledge of relevant intellectual property rights; 

·       Working knowledge of historical research methodology, and familiarity with standard bibliographic tools; 

·       Familiarity with automated request and workflow management software such as AEON.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of archival experience in engaging audiences with primary sources within an archival setting.
