Bomb Threat

If you receive a bomb threat via the phone:

1. Remain calm.
2. Listen carefully and try to elicit as much information as possible from the caller. Be polite, show interest, and try to keep the caller talking to you so you may gather useful information such as a description of the caller's voice, any background noises you hear, and the exact wording of the message.
3. Questions to ask the caller (These questions sound silly, but people give up information when they are nervous or anxious.):
   1. When will the bomb explode?
   2. What kind of bomb is it?
   3. What will cause it to explode?
   4. Where is it right now?
   5. What does it look like?
   6. Did you place the bomb or who placed the bomb?
   7. Why did you (they) place the bomb?
   8. What is your name and address?
4. If possible, write a note to a co-worker to call the University Police at 2-2200 and 9-911
5.  If it is not possible to write a note, call the University Police at 2-2200 as soon as you get off the phone with the caller.
6.  Information you will need to give UGAPD: your name, telephone number, location or address, the nature and location of the emergency.
7.  Do not touch anything that does not have to be disturbed.
   1. If lights are on do not turn them off.
   2. If fuse panels are turned off, do not activate them.
   3. Do not discuss the threat with other staff members or patrons.
8. The University Police will guide the entire building. The senior official of the Police Department on the scene will make the decision as to whether or not to evacuate the facility. University Police and designated MLC personnel will inform all staff & patrons of the appropriate emergency course of action.
9.  If an evacuation is necessary, follow the same guidelines established for fire.
