More than two dozen publications by The Georgia Review and the UGA Press, units of the University of Georgia Libraries, have been included in a free, open source database intended to help readers in further understanding issues of anti-racism and racial justice.
The database from JSTOR, an online library of academic journals, books, and primary sources, serves as a companion to the New York Public Library Schomburg Center’s Black Liberation Reading List, a collection of 95 fiction and nonfiction titles that range from memoirs, biographies, and essays to books of poetry, short stories, and graphic novels.
The JSTOR listing includes 12 poems and essays published in The Georgia Review, a nationally acclaimed literary-cultural journal, as well as 20 individual book chapters published by the UGA Press.
“We are honored to contribute so much content to this collaborative project, a timely resource for readers everywhere,” said Lisa Bayer, director of UGA Press. “While the world watches the U.S. grapple with racial justice and systemic change, university presses offer peer-reviewed scholarship that gives voice to the breadth of human knowledge and experience. Our collective publishing work intersects with that of the Schomburg Center and JSTOR to enrich and inform critical public humanities conversations around Black lives.”
The Georgia Review editor Gerald Maa added, “It’s a great honor to have so many of our pieces throughout the years included in this project, not only because it recognizes our continued effort to provide a hospitable space for conversations about Black liberation and livelihood, but moreover, and most importantly, because we can be of service to the greater public as part of this collective effort led by such prestigious and important institutions.”

Many of the works on the Schomburg Center’s reading list were authored by honorees of the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame or recipients of the Lillian Smith Book Awards, both of which are administered by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, one of three special collections units within the UGA Libraries.
