University of Georgia faculty members are encouraged to submit applications for the fourth round of the Provost’s Affordable Course Materials Grant program, which is administered by the UGA Libraries and the Center for Teaching and Learning,

Through the Provost's Affordable Course Materials Grant program, faculty members can receive $5,000 to support the transition from costly course materials such as textbooks to educational resources that are free for students or cost less than $40.

More information on the program, as well as the application form, can be found on the Provost's Office website. Applications are due December 1, 2021, and recipients will be notified of their funding status in January 2022.

The UGA community is invited to explore a new slate of databases that reflect the lives of Black Americans for the past two centuries, now available freely online through the UGA Libraries.

The Digital Library of Georgia has made its 2 millionth digitized and full-text- searchable historic newspaper page available freely online. The title page of the May 27, 1976 issue of the Augusta News-Review will become the 2 millionth page digitized by the Digital Library of Georgia. The newspaper, published by Mallory Millender from 1971 to 1985, identified itself as a “community paper with a predominantly Black readership” that presented the issues of the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) from a “Black perspective.” The digitization of the title was made possible by Georgia Public Library Service.

As part of the UGA Libraries’ commitment to affordable access to learning materials, the Libraries recently ceased the collection of late fees from students who return overdue books.

“Overdue book fines are educational materials costs borne directly by our students. Those with the least ability to pay feel the effect of fines most keenly, as do graduate students who are particularly heavy users of the Libraries’ print collections,” said Toby Graham, associate provost and university librarian. “This step will save students about $25,000 per year.”

EITS will conduct campus-wide network maintenance on Saturday, March 6 from 6:00 a.m. - midnight. As a result, there will be periodic outages of campus Internet and information systems. Since the exact timing of outages on Saturday will be unpredictable, please assume that online resources will be unavailable. 

For the Libraries, this means that access to the following will be intermittent or unavailable: GALILEO databases; online journals and ebooks; ILLiad interlibrary loan requesting; Aeon special collections requesting; EndNote installation; the Digital Library of Georgia and New Georgia Encyclopedia sites; and the Libraries' website.

The campus wireless network and Libraries' computers will also be unavailable during outages.

At UGA Libraries, we ask that students and patrons remain curious and courteous, as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

All staff and visitors are required to wear masks, in accordance with the University System of Georgia policy in place since the buildings reopened in summer 2020. This includes all open study areas and group studying at the Main Library, Science Library, Miller Learning Center, Carnegie Library, Special Collections Libraries, and branch locations for art, music, and curriculum materials.

Students, faculty, and staff with My EBSCOHost accounts:

An upcoming transition to OpenAthens as the Libraries' login system will automatically link an EBSCOHost account to your MyID. When you sign in to any EBSCO database or the Multi-Search after December 21, you will see folders for your new UGA EBSCOHost account. If you previously set up an individual My EBSCOHost account, choose 'Switch Accounts' to log into your older account.

The first time you log in, you will be asked to consent to the EBSCO Personal Data Retention and Usage Policy. This is the same policy that governs your older EBSCO account.

Merging folders and accounts:

UGA Libraries will continue to provide course reserve services for faculty planning their courses for spring semester, with some changes due to the continuing COVID-19 situation. Requests submitted by December 11 are guaranteed to be completed and accessible by the first day of Spring Semester classes, January 13.

Students and faculty in the University of Georgia community can continue to take advantage of library services after the Thanksgiving transition to online classes, whether in Athens or at home in another state.

In addition to online resources and virtual consultations with librarians and archivists, library facilities, including the Miller Learning Center, will remain available to students, faculty, staff, and the community through the remainder of the year and into the spring semester.
