Tours

The Georgia Capitol offers visitors an opportunity to view first-hand the most important government building in the state. Interpretive tours provided by the Georgia Capitol Museum give visitors an overview of Georgia history and the Capitol building. All tours of the Capitol, including the Capitol Museum and Hall of Valor, are free of charge.

Tour Schedule

Self-Guided Tours

For small groups, self-guided tours offer a convenient way to explore the building at their own pace, using one of our brochures. Visitors on self-guided tours may access the same areas as those on guided tours. Self-guided tours are available Monday through Friday, from 8 am – 5 pm. The building is closed on weekends and state holidays.

If taking a self-guided tour with a large student group, it is best to break into smaller groups of approximately 10, each with a leader.

There is no reservation required to take a self-guided tour; however, groups of 25 or more should call the Tour Desk at 404-463-4536 prior to their visit.

Self-guided brochures are usually available at the Capitol Tour Desk, but we suggest you print your own in advance, especially if your group will need more than two copies.

In-Person Guided Tours

Guided tours of the Capitol include information about the history of Georgia, the Capitol building, historical portraits, and the Georgia legislature. Tour routes and duration are subject to change. Groups should plan to spend 1-1.5 hours visiting the Capitol. This time includes a guided tour and a self-guided visit to our Capitol Museum, located on the fourth floor of the Capitol.

Small Group Guided Tours

Individuals and small groups may join small in-person guided tours, which accommodate up to 30 people. You can book in advance to secure your place or just drop-in.

Large Group Guided Tours

A large group guided tour is for a single group of students or adults, and must be booked in advance. These tours are for 10-50 people, except when the General Assembly is in session, in which case the maximum is 30 people.

Guided tours offer students the chance to experience the grandeur of the Georgia Capitol while reinforcing what they are already learning in class about Georgia’s history and government. Adult groups may reflect on their own role in Georgia’s democracy. Tours for the school year fill quickly. For best availability, please book well in advance of your desired tour date. We encourage teachers to prepare students for their visit by reviewing our Self-Guided Georgia Capitol Tour brochure.
