Job Summary

The News Archivist is responsible for the organization, inventory, and cataloging of all television news collections and assists in the processing and cataloging of other archival moving image and sound collections in the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection. This position provides reference and instruction in a variety of settings to faculty, students, staff, independent researchers and members of the community, and coordinates tours and other outreach efforts to promote and provide public access to the archives. The position is responsible for supervising and mentoring student assistants and paid interns participating in UGA’s Experiential Learning program.  
 

The Brown Media Archives is one of the largest media archives in the country. The Archives includes six news collections from across the state of Georgia and the WSB Washington DC Bureau tapes as well as 5 million feet of newsfilm, folk music field tapes, home movies, Georgia-related broadcasting, and large collections related to the University of Georgia. The Brown Media Archives staff is also responsible for the management and care of the audiovisual collections associated with the Hargrett Rare Books & Manuscript Library, and the Peabody Awards Collection. This position reports to the Metadata Archivist of the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection. The Department is comprised of four full-time librarians, four support staff, and student assistants.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • This position is responsible for the cataloging and processing of news film and video collections by implementing workflows, gathering information, creating technical and descriptive metadata records, and training others to successfully contribute to this work. 
  • Works closely with the Metadata Archivist and Digital Archivist to create workflows, policies, and procedures to ensure consistent and accurate cataloging and inventory of collections. Develops departmental metadata standards for news collections in Brown Media Archives by working closely with the Metadata Archivist, Department Head and other relevant parties within and beyond the Department.  
  • Supervises student assistants by providing basic education and training in the organization, description and cataloging of news and other collections.  
  • Develops transcript-eligible Experiential Learning opportunities and supervises Experiential Learning student interns. Provides regular mentorship and feedback while supporting student reflection, integration of learning through the position, and goal-setting for future learning for Experiential Learning interns. Facilitates Experiential Learning interns’ development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills and preparation for the workforce or advanced study after graduation.  
  • Works in concert with the Department Head, Metadata Archivist, Digital Archivist, and Media Archives Archivist to identify preservation, conservation, and digitization needs in the collections as part of departmental access and preservation plans.  
  • Assists with requests to license moving image and sound materials from the news collections, and works with Department Head to negotiate licensing fees for use of the collections by working with producers and other users.  
  • Provides reference and instruction in a variety of settings to faculty, students, staff, independent researchers and members of the community, including the Special Collections Libraries Faculty Fellows program. Works in alignment with standards and provides training in performing archival instruction and reference in accordance with professional standards and Media Archives best practices.  
  • Conducts tours of the building and exhibits, plans screenings, and coordinates other outreach efforts to promote and provide public access Media Archives collections.  
  • Promotes communication within the Department and the Libraries by encouraging and actively engaging in the exchange of needed information.  
  • Contributes to the mission of the Department by participating in the development and evaluation of policies and services, assessing user needs and satisfaction with learning outcomes, and serving on appropriate committees.  
  • Enhances the state, regional and national status of the Libraries and the University and develops and maintains professional skills by participating in continuing education and professional development activities such as conferences, workshops, and committee work by conducting research or writing for publication, or by engaging in other creative learning activities.  
  • Maintains awareness and acts upon changes and needs in the organization by assuming similar duties and responsibilities.  
Qualifications

An ALA-accredited master’s degree in librarianship/information science or foreign equivalent, or a master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work.

Candidates will be considered at the rank of Librarian or Archivist I, II, III, or IV.  

  • To be considered at the level of Librarian/Archivist II, candidates must have 2 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in librarianship/information science, or 2 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work and ACA certification for archivists  
  • To be considered at the level of Librarian/Archivist III, candidates must have 5 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in librarianship/information science, or 5 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work and ACA certification for archivists  
  • To be considered at the level of Librarian/Archivist IV, candidates must have 10 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in librarianship/information science, or 10 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work and ACA certification for archivists

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive educational environment and workplace. 
  • Ability to function as a contributing team member in a production-oriented environment. 
  • Familiarity with RDA, AACR2, LCSH, AMIM2, MIM: Genre Terms, PBCore, DACS and Dublin Core. 
  • Knowledge of issues related to audiovisual preservation, digital conversion of archival materials, and copyright. 
  • Working knowledge of computers and software programs, including Windows Office suite. 
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in establishing and maintaining successful working relationships with co-workers, donors, and patrons. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 
  • Working knowledge of the CollectiveAccess database. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of experience processing and describing sound and/or moving image materials in an archival setting. 
  • Two or more years of experience providing reference and instruction for users of archival audiovisual materials. 
  • Two or more years of experience managing and or supervising the work of others.
