Job Summary

The Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Librarian is responsible to the Head of the Research & Instruction Department for providing in-person and virtual reference assistance, library instruction, and one-on-one in-depth consultations in a range of subjects. The librarian creates reusable digital learning objects as well as course-related web pages and other guides. This position assists students, faculty, and staff in making effective use of library and other internet resources, citation management programs, and applications software. This position also provides remote assistance through phone, e-mail, and chat reference.
 

The Research and Instruction Department currently covers three in-person service points: the Main Library, the Shirley Mathis McBay Science Library, and the Zell B. Miller Learning Center. This position is based in the Main Library, which holds a broad range of materials in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and business. The Main Library is also home to the Map & Government Information Library, the Digital Library of Georgia, and the DigiLab (a digital humanities lab). The Main Library’s Research and Instruction Department is comprised of 10 librarians and 3 student assistants. The librarian will work on special projects geared toward undergraduate success in Miller Learning Center or other relevant locations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Prepares faculty and students to make effective use of research resources by teaching sessions for First Year Writing, First Year Odyssey, and other core undergraduate courses as part of the Library’s teaching team. Coordinates instruction and tours for visiting groups such as high school AP/IB classes, summer enrichment programs, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Develops asynchronous instructional content such as videos, interactive tutorials, and how-to guides. Manages the Libraries “How to Guides and Tutorials” website content to ensure that guides and tutorials are kept up to date, coordinates departmental use of instructional Springshare products by keeping up with new features, and identifies additional topics for new learning objects.

Works with library colleagues to plan and publicize workshops and programs at the UGA Libraries that support student success; performs outreach to diverse student groups and underrepresented populations; participates in undergraduate outreach and promotion efforts including student orientations and serving on the Libraries Marketing Committee.

Promotes use of online and print resources by providing a variety of virtual and in-person reference services to the university community and the general public, including both general and in-depth reference assistance.

Develops and maintains professional skills by participating in continuing education and professional development activities such as conferences, workshops, and committee work; conducts research or writing for publication, and/or engages in other creative and learning activities.

Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via the Libraries’ listserv and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.

Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the organization by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

An ALA-accredited master’s degree in librarianship/information science or foreign equivalent 

Candidates will be considered at the rank of Librarian I, II, III, or IV.

  • To be considered at the level of Librarian II, candidates must have 2 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree.
  • To be considered at the level of Librarian III, candidates must have 5 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree.
  • To be considered at the level of Librarian IV, candidates must have 10 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies
  • Ability to develop engaging instruction sessions utilizing inclusive strategies to instruct users effectively both individually and in the classroom setting.
  • Enthusiasm for instruction and a commitment to meeting the research, teaching, and learning needs of UGA’s diverse undergraduate population.
  • Familiarity with online tools, web applications and emerging instructional technologies (video capture and editing software, e-learning authoring software, learning management systems, etc.).
  • Knowledge of virtual reference services.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace and particularly with regard to the delivery of information resources.
  • Ability to create and maintain productive, long-term, effective working relationships with faculty, students, and colleagues.

Salary and Benefits

Minimum annual salary for this position begins at $50,000. UGA librarians are non-tenured faculty members. UGA offers an attractive benefits program including a choice of health and retirement plans, dental plan, vision plan, tuition remission, paid relocation, 21 days annual leave, 12 days sick leave, and 12 paid holidays.
