GIS Day is set for Wednesday Nov. 14 at the Main Library and will take place from 10-2.
There will be a variety of activities, including lightning talks, drone demonstrations, an augmented reality sandbox, and a Mapathon. We'll also have tables featuring campus and local organizations, as well as snacks (and cake!)
The Teacher’s Monthly Reports Collection, monthly teacher reports from African-American rural and city schools operating from 1930 to 1939 in Laurens County, Georgia, is now available online, thanks in part to the DLG's 2018 Competitive Digitization grant program, a funding opportunity intended to broaden DLG partner participation for statewide historic digitization projects.

These monthly reports were created by individual teachers to be submitted to the Laurens County Superintendent. The reports list student names, age, grade and attendance for the month. Many of these records also show teacher salaries, addresses, and other information. The DLG has digitized 126 folders with reports for 58 schools.
The Pinebranch, the first student publication of South Georgia State Normal College and Georgia State Woman's College (both earlier names for Valdosta State University) is now available online.
The Pinebranch was a literary magazine published from September or October of 1917 to May of 1934. In addition to stories and poetry, the magazine included editorials, and news from campus and alumni. An exhibit opening today at the Circle Gallery in the Jackson Street Building features two artists taking close, and very different, looks at the human relationship to nature.
"Hearing the Trees," paintings by Katherine Mitchell, and "Garden of Biotanical Delights," ceramics by Diane Solomon Kempler will be on display though Dec. 7.
An opening reception is today 4:30 to 6 p.m.
The Digital Library of Georgia is pleased to announce the availability of three new historical map collections from the City of Savannah Municipal Archives:- Record Series 3121-007, Engineering Department – General Maps, 1798-1961, no date,https://dlg.usg.edu/collection/gsg_edgm, which contains maps from 1798 to 1961 that illustrate Savannah property holdings, as well as land subdivision for City and private development. The maps also record property lines, right-of-ways, water and sewer lines, and street openings. Many maps include the names of property owners.

ATHENS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Over the past 64 years, many of you or your family have appeared on News 12, as well as countless stories and events. All those memories are now being preserved for future generations.
The WRDW archives show everything from old anchor signoffs, to James Brown interviews, to Masters coverage decades back. Now, we’ve donated those tapes to the University of Georgia in hopes of preserving all our history.
Margaret Compton is a media archivist at UGA. Her job is to keep these cherished records safe for years to come.
“As stations have been saving their tape, that really compares to a family's home movies. The home movies of Augusta are at the TV station,” Compton explained the value, both educational and sentimental, of these ¾” tapes.
The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) is pleased to announce the availability of Georgia town films and home movies digitized by the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection (BMA). DLG staff provided enhanced description of these moving image resources that enables users to locate segments of the moving image footage without having to view the footage in its entirety.
Berry College, Georgia State University, and the Oconee Regional Library are among three Competitive Digitization grants awarded through an ongoing subgranting program with the Digital Library of Georgia.
These institutions are recipients of the second set of grants awarded in a program intended to broaden partner participation in the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG). The DLG solicited proposals for historic digitization projects in a statewide call, and applicants submitted proposals for projects with a cost of up to $5,000. The projects will be administered by DLG staff who will perform digitization and descriptive services on textual (not including newspapers), graphic, and audio-visual materials.
Some 4,000 hours of programming produced by public radio and television stations between 1941 and 1999 will be digitized and made available to the public, thanks to a federal grant for the Brown Media Archives at the University of Georgia Libraries. The programming was originally submitted for consideration for Peabody Awards.
Juliette Gordon Low’s 1908 India travel correspondence is now available online via the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) at http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/CollectionsA-Z/jglowc_search.html. The collection, Juliette Gordon Low Correspondence, Series India Letters, belongs to Girl Scouts of the USA and is housed at the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace.
