The Web Developer will report to the IT Senior Manager of the GALILEO/GIL Technical Support Group. This position is responsible for programming web applications primarily using Ruby on Rails. These applications are digital library tools and services, including tools for archivists, discovery interfaces using Blacklight (a Rails package popular in the library space), and integrations with and enhancements to third-party tools such as Ex Libris Alma/Primo (a Library Management System) and the EBSCO Discovery Service.
The Web Developer will be the primary maintainer for some applications; for others they’ll work as part of small project-based teams, with the lead GALILEO developer assigning tasks. As an Agile workplace, we expect all programmers to participate in peer code review, pair programming, stakeholder meetings, retrospectives, and daily standups. We’re a semi-distributed team and use Slack for much of our communication.
While this position will be primarily responsible for tools internal to the UGA libraries, our team also maintains GALILEO (GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online), an online library portal to subscription-only information used by more than 3000 institutions, including the University System of Georgia and Technical College System of Georgia along with Georgia K-12 schools, public libraries and some private higher education and K12 institutions. Other projects include the Digital Library of Georgia, the Civil Rights Digital Library, GALILEO Interconnected Libraries (GIL), and more.

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Knowledge of Ruby or comparable programming language(s) such as Python or PHP.
Knowledge of SQL-based database systems, such as Postgres or MySQL.
Familiarity with an MVC web framework, such as Ruby on Rails or Django.
Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Preferred:
Experience with JavaScript-based frameworks such as React, Vue, or Angular.

Familiarity with Solr or a similar full-text search engine like Project Blacklight
Experience contributing to open-source projects.
