Athens-area history buffs are invited to dig in to the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries archives with two free community events planned for Saturday, Sept. 30.

The day begins with a Local History Expo at the Oconee County Library, featuring mementoes from UGA Athletics history, including items associated with the Georgia vs. Auburn rivalry to correspond to the football game scheduled for that day.

In addition, the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library will display items from its collection that are associated with Oconee County history, and attendees can also learn more from members of the Oconee County Historical Society. The event is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

That afternoon, families are invited to the Special Collections Libraries Building in Athens for a Family Day celebrating the Hargrett Library’s exhibit on St. Catherines Island. As the exhibit explores the history of the coastal Georgia island unearthed through archaeological digs, activities will include a planned dig in front of the Hull Street Building, creating pinch pots, and learning about stone tools and other artifacts dating back centuries.

The Family Day event, held in conjunction with the UGA Archaeology Lab, is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m., and is free and open to the public.
