Join the Russell Library on Thursday, October 10th, from 5:30pm-7:00pm, for the fifth annual Food, Power and Politics Lecture with Dr. Daniel N. Warshawsky from Wright State University. He will deliver a talk on food banks, their origin, and what factors go into the pressing, and increasing, global need for them. Dr. Leah Carmichael will moderate.
This year's lecture is in partnership with UGA Campus Kitchen and their "Turkey Palooza" Thanksgiving Food Drive. For 12 years, the Campus Kitchen at UGA, a program of the UGA Office of Service-Learning, has partnered with local non-profit Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA) to help provide Thanksgiving meals for families experiencing food insecurity in our community. Participate in the can drive to help us provide over 300 families with ingredients for home-cooked Thanksgiving meals. Our goal is to collect 60, 15-oz cans of pumpkin puree! Attendees are encouraged to bring their can donations to the lecture, and Campus Kitchen staff will be there to collect the donations.

Daniel N. Warshawsky is a Professor in the School of Social Sciences and International Studies at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where he teaches courses in geography and directs the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program. His research examines food waste, food insecurity, and food banks in the world’s regions, with a primary focus on cities in North America, Europe, and Africa. In 2023, Daniel published a book with the University of Iowa Press called Food Waste, Food Insecurity, and the Globalization of Food Banks. Daniel earned his B.A. in geography from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2003), M.S. in geography from the University of Wisconsin at Madison (2006), and Ph.D. in geography from the University of Southern California (2011). Before coming to Wright State, Daniel was Assistant Professor (Teaching) and Director of Graduate Studies in the Spatial Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California, where he taught courses in Geographic Information Science and Technology. In 2022, Daniel was named the Frederick A. White Distinguished Professor of Professional Service for his service to Wright State University and the broader Dayton community.
