Have you ever heard a sound that evokes a memory or an emotion? Listened to something that pulls you back to a particular place and time, a memory, a feeling? Sounds are an integral part of our knowing and being in the world, and yet they are often overlooked or flattened into textual representations in traditional research. Sonic inquiry is an interdisciplinary method of research that takes up skills and traditions from geography, anthropology, ethnography, and the arts.

Using StoryMapsJS, Monica Berg will present her historical research into the early years of tourism in Yellowstone National Park. She will take us back to the late nineteenth century, showing us what a typical tourist at this time could find themselves seeing and doing on a trip out West.

The UGA Libraries and Willson Center for Humanities DigiLab is hosting a panel discussing the experiences of women in coding. Topics to be discussed relate to gender diversity in computer science and computational methods, including issues with computer coding as a profession, coding as part of research methods, and classroom experiences learning coding. Panel participants are members of R Ladies of Athens and UGA's girls.code.

Stephen Black will describe how he came to research lyrics written by Atlanta-area artists, his work creating his own corpus, and share some of his findings. He worked with the DigiLab to complete this project and will be earning the Digital Humanities certificate for undergraduates after culminating his research this semester.

At the UGA Libraries, we’ve got FACTS. We invite students to explore all of the resources and services that can help them on their academic journey by participating in our FACTS-Finding Mission, a self-guided scavenger-hunt style orientation through our major locations: the Main Library, the Science Library, and the Miller Learning Center.

Students will have a chance to take a break from studying at one of the UGA Libraries and Paws & Relax during finals. The Main Library, Science Library, and Miller Learning Center will host therapy dogs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 6. The outdoor event will give students a chance to get some comfort from furry friends and learn about student wellness initiatives and the University Health Center. Paws & Relax will also be held outside Ramsey and Aderhold Hall.

Celebrate National Poetry Month with the UGA Libraries at two student poetry readings.

The April 27 and 28 events will feature student poets from Stillpoint, UGA’s student literary magazine, and is hosted in conjunction with The Georgia Review, a nationally acclaimed literary-culture journal that is a unit of the Libraries.
